The Church of Scientology is a controversial new religion developed by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard based on his psychological theories of Dianetics. It is an amalgamation of Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism science fiction and psychology. It claims that it can free people of unhappiness and help them realize their true nature and powers. Its teachings are not compatible with true Christianity. TIME magazine's May 6, 1991 cover story described Scientology as a""hugely profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner”

French prosecutor seeks dissolution of Scientology

June 15, 2009 - The Church of Scientology's Paris headquarters and bookshop are defendants in a fraud trial that began on May 25. State prosecutor Maud Coujard urged the court to return a guilty verdict and dissolve the organization in France.
Registered as a religion in the United States, with celebrity members such as actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, Scientology enjoys no such legal protection in France, where it has faced repeated accusations of being a money-making cult.
